Rested Thrust

Cause & Calling

There is a difference between a cause and a calling. A cause is something we do for a reason. We work for many reasons : enjoyment, meaning, and contribution. Not all our cause connect us to our inner satisfaction or deeper sense of purpose. There seems to be a tension between what pays now and what pays off. This tension disturbs our peace and confront us to question : who am I? What is my purpose and calling?

We cannot find our calling until we engaged in the dimensions of exploration and discovery to rediscover our passion. That does not mean we should resign from our job and start the search. We can still be working on our jobs while searching for the connections to our passions on a voluntary basis without giving ourselves fully. Yet there are some who may not have such luxury of dwelling while searching when they are out of job. In this extreme case, I view it as an opportunity for God’s ‘recruitment’ awakening and realigning of the inner passion to your purpose : work while you learn to rest in Him.

Passion

Passion is an intense desire or enthusiasm for something. It makes us feel alive and energized. Passion yearns for personal expression through external (natural world, society, culture), internal (emotions, thoughts, will), and the spiritual connections; a discovery of purpose bigger than ourselves. Making art offers the opportunity for such discovery. Art allows a creative process for personal growth, as unsettling as it may be, a opportunity for reinventing a new you. Art is like an process of thrusting into uncertainty and yet able to find rest; trusting all is well in the midst of chaos.

Art

Art comes in many forms. The simplest form is drawing and painting. Many children draw/colour before they can even speak. To me this is a gift from our Creator who has first equipped us to express our inner being in relation to the outside and spiritual worlds where words are inadequate to express and build our inner soul. (After all God has breathed us as soul-being). We have come to a time when arts is no longer taking a back-seat. There is a rising interest to redeem the important role of the arts where academic discipline and religion alone cannot attain. Let’s return to the pure faith journey of art making; to ride onto the waves of discovering the treasures He has given us through the Arts, and to realize the dreams He has weaved in us even before we were born.
